Sherm Pridham, 69, who now lives in Stratham, said the range about in may take on a life of its own now that word has spread through email, in conversations and through his Dec. 31 write to the editor in the Portsmouth Herald. He sees it as an opportunity to say goodbye to a principal old lady who was so much a part of their lives.

"It will be replaced," he wrote in his letter, "but the Memorial Span that we lived next to, and was such a presence in our lives, will be gone."

Pridham, who grew up in the bishopric's Puddle Dock area, said he was talking with his friend Bob Cunningham, who grew up in the South End and now lives in Keene. "We starting talking about the Remembrance Bridge and he said, 'Man, we had a time (growing up in its shadow). We should get together a bunch of South Enders and Puddle Dockers and ambulate the bridge one last time,'" Pridham said.

Pridham spoke with plain relish of his Portsmouth childhood. "You'd go up there and fish. 'Course, you never caught anything. And there were these give away bankings on the side (leading up to the bridge), and we'd slide down on cardboard boxes. We couldn't dominate them, but that was all the more fun," he said.
