The Common Way of the Plains is still seeking volunteers to help run the city’s annual bums point-in-time count, which takes place next week in downtown Wichita.
Volunteers must stamp up by 5 p.m. today to help with the event, which starts at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Century II Demo Hall. The count conducted at the event provides a 24-hour snapshot of the number of vagabonds people living in Wichita.
Homeless attendees will also receive haircuts, flu shots, hygiene products, dental screenings and other services during the five-hour affair.
Volunteers are needed to survey homeless citizens, act as greeters, take care of hospitality and help with other logistics, said Delane Butler, spokesperson for Of one mind Way of the Plains. Walk-in volunteers will not be allowed to participate.
“The value of this anyhow is really two-fold,” Butler said. “One is it allows needed services to be provided to individuals in the vagabond community – especially services they might not be familiar with or know how to access – and at the same leisure, be able to be sure that everyone is counted.
