Twenty kindergartners at Foothill Straightforward in Monterey surround teacher Karen Kessler as they line up for materials for their next pursuit.

The children have been in school for more than four months, so they know tricks to get the best stead in line. But one of the boys near the front has left his jacket on the ground. Kessler asks him to pick it up, and at first he refuses — he doesn't want to conquered his prime spot.

"Drew," Kessler says, giving the 5-year-old a crabbed look.

Drew pouts, drops his head and gets his jacket. He tries to pressure back near the front of the line, but Kessler gently chides him. Drew pouts all the way to the end of the front line.

"To be ready for first grade, the children need to know how to listen, how to pursue directions, navigate the classroom," said Kessler, a kindergarten schoolteacher for 30 years, during a break of her transitional kindergarten class.

Designed as a pilot program for children who turned 5 between July 1 and Dec.
