"These inexperienced people come home from the war and disappear into society. Often they don’t have anyone to talk to who in fact speaks their language and shares their experiences," said Teaneck residing Walter Nygard, a Vietnam War veteran and one of the organizers of the Wednesday afternoon amicable vigils in front of the Teaneck Armory.
He noted that the Veterans Administration has been powerless to adequately address the issue of mental health of the returning veterans.
As a d, the veterans themselves have created programs to aid in their own rehabilitation and integration into society. Among these is Warrior Writers, a program for originative writers that has published several anthologies, and Combat Papers, a printmaking program in which veterans metamorphose their old utility uniforms into paper. The paper then becomes the medium for printmaking, painting, picture or writing.
The nationwide project which was founded in 2007 is attempting to organize a permanent home at the New Jersey Center for Printmaking in Branchburg, said David Keefe, an artist and Iraq War battle-scarred, who, along with Eli Wright, coordinates the Branchburg program. The program is free to all veterans and meets all day every Sunday. It has been funded through April by a cede from Somerset County Rotary clubs, and Keefe hopes that the admit will be renewed.
