That had gotten my prominence. It was the fact that I had never heard of a place called Mt. Taboun.   For Dr. Bailey, the name of the install might have been as dry as the bones unearthed there.  But for me the word hung in the air like a slice of ripe fruit, forbidden fruit, and the Mitochondrial Eve within me was reaching for it. Forbidden, that is, for a Palestinian.

Dr. Bailey continued, now speaking of grotto paintings found around the world. He was explaining how early man pressed their palms against give way walls; blowing red ochre around the outline of their hands.  He raised his own in cahoots together slowly, revealing an open palm.  “Hands.  Why have we always been so fascinated by them?”  Dream of after class ended the question lingered in my mind, a feather floating on a red ochre puff.

Now I see hands everywhere.  On bathroom stalls, imprinted in cement, jaded as amulets, the once unnoticed shape now follows me.  And I wonder, why hands, indeed?
