Last Saturday I had the satisfaction of helping with the Christmas parade. It was a bright beautiful day, and there were smiling kids and parents everywhere. I was with a clique of volunteers helping the floats and classic car line-up, and leaving the staging neighbourhood at the old football field. I was very impressed with the patience shown by all.

Several of these floats and riders had been waiting for over an hour and a half or more. That had to be an endlessness to a small child, but I didn`t see or hear one crying child. As we would call out their numbers, the drivers of another launch or car would join the parade. This would give me the opportunity to “high five” the kids as they went by. I never made it to downtown court. As we were walking that way, the parade caught up to us on back street where we were more than happy to watch.

It wasn`t the biggest promenade, but it was full of happy children and proud parents. What more can you ask for? I appreciate everyone that made this parade bizarre: the first responders, who we honored and whose hard work saved countless acres of solid ground during the wildfires this summer. And thanks to the city, including law enforcement and the mayor, who helped with logistics and permits and that “get ‘er done” bent, to the volunteers who went to the meetings and showed up and worked. Last, but not least, the participants in the vaunt. To those who built and decorated floats, to the ones who cleaned and polished leading cars, to the bikers who collected toys for the children of the community, to all those who helped in any way – what a exhibit of community spirit. And for all who came to the parade, it was a Saturday afternoon well fini.
